You start with Mordor flipping you off from across the Anduin, Harad unbuckling its pants in anticipation to your south and the potential for Isengard and Rhun to crash the party. Third Age + MOS Submod for Medieval II: Gondor. After taking Lisboa I typically find that the entire population of North Africa has found weapons and marched against me. One-province start with the Moors breathing down your neck from day 1. Stainless Steel 6.4 for Medieval II: Portugal. Tons of enemies and a poor economy demands very careful, yet aggressive play. Rome II: I find the Suebi campaign to be an uphill battle right from the start. maybe the Aizu? Starting province is huge and hard to defend, and given the inevitability of treachery in TW games, you can be defending on all fronts very quickly. Don't worry, though, you have a friendly neigh- nope! Fuck you, it's a betrayal! How about that other friendly fact- nope! Fuck you, your enemies just killed them! Yikes.įall of the Samurai: Hmm. You have to balance expanding with defending against what feels like a barrage of full stacks from all directions. Shogun 2: I found Uesugi really, really tough, especially on high difficulties. I'm also lousy with and against horse archers, so the Turks hurt my Byzantine campaigns and the Mongols hurt my Turkish ones. I suck at starting with a large empire because I prefer to build up from a small start. Medieval II: For me, probably the Byzantines or Turks. Caught between the Carthaginians and Romans and without an impressive lineup of units. The Greenskins, however, have a really difficult time, having to face off against the best roster in the game (Dwarfs) who also happen to have the most income, as well as rival Orc clans that keep fucking your stuff up.

Empire can be a challenge in the late game if the Dwarfs fail to hold off the Greenskins, but otherwise it is pretty average. Warhammer: Chaos is pretty difficult, what with you having to space out your armies and manage the awakened tribes and all. Everybody else is going to be just a couple of battles away from dying at all times. They are legendarily abysmal.Īttila: It would be easiest to name the factions that AREN'T difficult to play. I think the Otomo get it worse though, as their religion causes severe penalties with their neighbors. Shogun 2: In the vanilla game, the Uesugi have a rough starting position. Napoleon: Once again, Prussia takes the cake, being right in the way of Napoleon's armies and having the antagonistic Austrians and Russians nearby. France might count because, despite being one of the most powerful nations in Europe, that asinine map means you only have two provinces to your name. Both have nasty start positions with enemies surrounding them. Mongols are at your gates and your roster is just trash compared to the more flesh-out rosters of Western Europe.Įmpire: Either Poland or Prussia. It's when it becomes really apparent that the game was designed with the player being Roman in mind, and the other factions were just there to fight. Carthage, meanwhile, is surrounded on all sides by enemies, has to face 3 Roman factions right from the start, and has a sub-standard roster. Numidia probably takes the cake because their roster is total trash, but they have the advantage of having nobody to their south to bother them. Think we missed one?
